ABOUT

BACKGROUND

  • Approximately 800 women die from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth each day and 99% of these deaths occur in developing countries.

  • Anemia is a large contributor to these deaths, especially in the region of India.

  • 16% of maternal deaths due to anemia occur in India

  • Approximately 60% of rural women did not receive any check ups during their last pregnancy.

OUR DEVICE

  • Iron Woman incorporates principles of pulse oximetry technology and will be worn on the wrist.

  • Hemoglobin level readings will be collected hourly and feedback will be given to the user once a day.

  • A light signal on the wristband will be activated as an update or warning when the user needs to take action to increase iron levels.

OUR GOAL

The problem we are trying to resolve with our wearable device is the high pregnancy mortality rate due to anemia in Northern Indian women, and the low hemoglobin levels that are then passed on to their children, leading to a continual anemic cycle.
